A magnitude-5.9 earthquake about 22 miles southeast of Calexico was widely felt today in the San Diego area and southern Riverside County.
The shaking was also felt in Temecula, including the four-story Tower Plaza building near the intersection of Rancho California and Ynez roads. Some occupants of the building said the structure shook for 30 to 45 seconds. Authorities in Southwest Riverside County have not reported any serious problems.
At the downtown City Hall building in San Diego, occupants felt about 30 seconds of sustained shaking as lights swayed and the building could be heard creaking.
