The forecast prompted the National Football League's Baltimore Ravens to postpone the start of their match against the Chicago Bears by more than three hours, from 4:15 pm local time, 20 December, according to observations of the team Web site.

Snow should be tapering off, or until the end of the New York Jets host the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL game at the Meadowlands in New Jersey the same day, said Brian Ciemnecki, National Weather meteorologist in Upton, New York.

Smithsonian Closed

Washington area hospitals and nursing homes asking for volunteers four vehicles with all-wheel drive for transport to hospital staff to work with the U.S. Navy Band holiday concert canceled it.

The storm could not disrupt the unusual weekend meeting of the U.S. Senate, where lawmakers passed 636.3 billion U.S. dollars of defense spending law in the morning and moved for health care law.

Democratic Senator Mark Begich said in an interview that he sent his family home in Alaska and she is ready to stay even though it may be hard to get out of Washington after.

"You have 1 inch, and everything off," said Begich. "Maybe desserts."
