Outfielder Marlon Byrd (FSY) agreed Thursday to a $15 million, three-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.

Byrd hit .283 with 20 homers and 89 RBIs last season for the Texas Rangers. and will likely take over in center from Kosuke Fukudome (FSY), who would move to right field full-time after the trade of troubled Milton Bradley (FSY) to Seattle.

A career .279 hitter with 60 homers and 335 RBIs in 785 major league games with Philadelphia, Washington and Texas, Byrd will be reunited with former Texas and current Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. In three seasons working with Jaramillo in Texas, Byrd batted .295 with 40 homers and 212 RBIs.

He has played all three outfield positions during his career and had a .991 fielding percentage last season with only three errors in 341 chances. He made 100 starts for the Rangers in center field, 35 in left and six in right.

The 32-year-old Byrd originally was selected by Philadelphia in the 10th round of the 1999 amateur draft.

Buffalo Bills national scout Buddy Nix is the team's new general manager, the first move in owner Ralph Wilson's effort to revamp his front office.

Nix was introduced at a news conference Thursday as the Bills (5-10) prepare to close their season hosting Indianapolis (14-1) on Sunday. Nix fills a void after Marv Levy stepped down as general manager following the 2007 season.

The 70-year-old Nix had been out of football after retiring in 2008 following a stint as the San Diego Chargers assistant GM/director of player personnel.

The Bills also considered other in-house personnel men, John Guy and Tom Modrak, for the GM position. Nix, who turned 70 on Dec. 6, impressed Wilson during a recent face-to-face meeting, and stood out above the other two candidates that were interviewed.

Before returning to the Bills, Nix served as the San Diego Chargers' assistant GM and director of player personnel and was given significant credit for the rebuilding of the team's talent base until he left the organization in 2008. He also has worked under former Bills architects John Butler and A.J. Smith, the current Chargers general manager.

Nix's first task will be choosing a head coach. As a first-time head coach, Fewell is considered a candidate, but the Bills are expected to look for someone with previous experience. Two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan interviewed for the job, but has reportedly turned down the Bills.

With Nix in place, it's uncertain whether the Bills will retain Modrak, Guy or Jim Overdorf, the team's senior vice president of football operations.

When New York police received a report of a suspicious van with tinted windows, no license plates and a bogus law enforcement placard parked in the heart of Times Square just one day before the New Year's celebration, they took no chances, evacuating thousands of tourists from the area and warning the occupants of surrounding buildings.

Patrol officers spotted the van Dec. 30 around 11 a.m. on Broadway between 41st and 42nd streets, a tarp partially covered the van, and a placard in the window said "detective's crime clinic, Metropolitan New Jersey and New York," a nonexistent law enforcement agency.

Shouting and putting up metal and wood barricades, police began clearing several blocks, directing thousands of Times Square tourists to move south and west. Counterterrorism and bomb squad crews responded and a robot was used to examine the vehicle. Officers then approached on foot and peered in the windows.

Stephanie Gonzalez, who works in the glass-walled tower directly in front of where the van was parked, said announcements were made around 11 a.m. that people should head to the west side of the building, away from the vehicle. She left the building entirely.

Paul J. Browne, chief NYPD spokesman, said there were no corresponding terror threats involving the vehicle but said the department takes extra precautions around New Year's Eve when hundreds of thousands of revelers from around the world are drawn to the heart of Times Square to watch the ball drop at midnight.

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake about 22 miles southeast of Calexico was widely felt today in the San Diego area and southern Riverside County.

The shaking was also felt in Temecula, including the four-story Tower Plaza building near the intersection of Rancho California and Ynez roads. Some occupants of the building said the structure shook for 30 to 45 seconds. Authorities in Southwest Riverside County have not reported any serious problems.

At the downtown City Hall building in San Diego, occupants felt about 30 seconds of sustained shaking as lights swayed and the building could be heard creaking.

New York City's Times Square reopened to traffic after a bomb squad found no explosive devices in an abandoned van parked in the area.

The area was blocked off and two high-rise buildings home to Nasdaq and publishing company Conde Nast were partially evacuated but allowed back in around 1 p.m. Nasdaq said its trading was unaffected. Conde Nast was in the process of evacuating when the order was lifted.

The van had tinted windows and a placard from a nonexistent law enforcement agency on the dashboard. It had no license plates, but a temporary registration was found inside.

"Its presence in Times Square just before New Year's Eve causes us concern, and that's why we're taking extra precautions," he said.

New Year's Eve in Times Square draws hundreds of thousands of revelers each year. The NYPD takes extra precautions around this time of year, doing sweeps of garages looking for suspicious vehicles, Mr. Browne said.

On the heels of allegations of mistreatment by Red Raiders wide receiver Adam James, Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach has been fired.

The firing comes one day before Leach was due an $800,000 bonus, and only ten months since he signed a 5-year, $12.7 million contract extension.

The firing of Leach raises many questions: Are many big-time college coaches going too far in their treatment of players in an effort to win?

Are athletic directors using player allegations as an easy way to justify cause in getting rid of high-priced coaches?

His firing most certainly can't be justified by looking at his record. After a Tech best-ever 11-2 finish last season, Leach followed that up this year with an 8-4 mark and a trip to Saturday's Alamo Bowl against Michigan State. He ends up 84-43 in 10 seasons at Texas Tech, reaching a bowl game in each season.

At the end of the day, there is a very happy athletic director at Texas Tech and a jovial James family. However, it is a sad day in Lubbock for every fan of Red Raider football.

It is also yet another wake up call to coaches everywhere. Every coach will be taking a look in the mirror and thinking about whether or not they are doing anything that will make them the next Mike Leach or Mark Mangino.

Today is Tiger Woods' birthday, and the PGA star continues to be plagued with rumors concerning his history with women and his golfing future. Now, however, Woods turns 34-year-old amidst a rumor that claims the golfer remains out of the public eye because he recently received significant plastic surgery.

In a new blog post from retired sports journalist and editor Furman Bisher, an email from a "trustworthy journalist" Bisher has known for years suggests Woods suffered injuries to the face after his wife hit him with a 9-iron. When Woods was taken to the hospital, the severity of his injuries was revealed and he soon flew to Phoenix to receive plastic surgery.

If the email is to be believed, Woods' recovery time from surgery was about a month. Since his November car accident, Woods has remained underground.

Jimmy Sullivan, also known as Rev, and Reverend Tholomew plague died. Avenged Sevenfold Drummer, 28, was found dead in his Huntington Beach, California home on Monday. Apparently died of natural causes, but authorities are investigating.

Sullivan, whose real name is James Owen Sullivan, founder of the band with M Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, Matt Wendt in 1999. In 2002 he founded the band with a smooth Pinkly seven guitarist Synyster Gates.

A recall has been issued for all Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplets in the 100-count bottles with a red EZ-Open cap, as they may contain an unusual chemical contamination that has caused a number of illnesses.

The chemical, known as 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, has been detected in trace amounts in the recalled medication. It is believed to have been caused by the breakdown of a chemical used to treat wooden pallets.

The FDA announced the Tylenol recall on December 18; expanding a previous November recall that was originally limited to only 5 lots of the Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplets. The bottles are believed to be contaminated with a chemical that has caused victims to suffer nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

Consumers have reported that contaminated bottles have a moldy or mildew-like odor. The FDA recall notes that illnesses reported to Tylenol manufacturer McNeil Consumer Healthcare have been temporary and non-serious, but warns that the heath effects of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole have not been thoroughly studied.

The FDA and McNeil recommend that any consumers who have products affected by the Tylenol recall contact McNeil for instructions on how to receive a full refund or replacement at www.tylenol.com. Anyone who has suffered an adverse reaction after taking the recalled pills should contact the FDA’s MedWatch program at www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Tylenol has stopped production of the 100-count bottles temporarily, and will reintroduce the product once production has been moved into a new facility in January.

TAPPER: I want to get your reaction to a comment from the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who said in a statement: "I am troubled by several aspects of this case, including how the suspect escaped the attention of the State Department and law enforcers when his father apparently reported concerns about his son's extremist behavior to the U.S. embassy in Lagos, how the suspect managed to retain a U.S. visa after such complaints, and why he was not recognized as someone who reportedly was named in the terrorist database."

NAPOLITANO: Well, I think, first of all, we are investigating, as always, going backwards to see what happened and when, who knew what and when. But here -- I think it's important for the public to know, there are different types of databases.

And there were simply, throughout the law enforcement community, never information that would put this individual on a no-fly list or a selectee list. So that's number one.

Number two, I think the important thing to recognize here is that once this incident occurred, everything happened that should have. The passengers reacted correctly, the crew reacted correctly, within an hour to 90 minutes, all 128 flights in the air had been notified. And those flights already had taken mitigation measures on the off-chance that there was somebody else also flying with some sort of destructive intent.

NAPOLITANO: Well, again, we are going to go back and really do a minute-by-minute, day-by-day scrub of that sort of thing. But when he presented himself to fly, he was on a tide (ph) list. What a tide list simply says is, his name had come up somewhere somehow.

Class 6A

Bidding for the first state title in program history, OLATHE SOUTH (Sunflower) came up just short last year, falling 57-47 in the title game to Washburn Rural. The Falcons made that postseason run after losing Kelsey Balcom to injury. She's back, as is almost everyone else, including All-Class 6A first-teamer Natalie Knight, who averaged 16.3 ppg and also led South in steals and assists.

After winning back-to-back state titles in 2006 and 2007, WICHITA HEIGHTS (Wichita City) has had to settle for two straight fourth-place showings. That won't set well with Falcons again this year, not with everyone back from last year's team. Junior Jhasmin Bowen (6-2) was Heights' leading scorer and rebounder last year and has a talented group around her with senior Kamisha Richards headed to New Orleans for college ball. The Falcons have another strong group of newcomers to team with the returners and should make a run at another crown.

The graduation of Oklahoma State signee Heather Howard will hurt SM WEST (Sunflower), but the Vikings do return four of their top six players from last year's squad that placed third at the 6A state tournament. Junior guard LIzzy Jeronimus is more than capable of taking over as the Vikings' go-to player, averaging 14.5 ppg last year, and fellow junior guard Brooke Katterhenry is coming off a big state tournament where she averaged 16 ppg.

The injury bug hit DODGE CITY (Western Athletic) hard last year as the Red Demons lost three starters for the bulk of the 2008-09 season. The experience gained should help Dodge this year, along with the return of two of those players, including Az'Lynn Thompson, who was the WAC MVP in volleyball this season.

LAWRENCE (Sunflower) captured the 2008 state championship, but slipped to a 10-12 team last year as it lost Kansas signee Tania Jackson before the season started to an injury and never really recovered. That allowed some young players to gain experience, which should pay off this season as the Lions have a good combination of quickness in guard Haley Parker and size in six-footers April and Shelby Miller.

SM NORTH (Sunflower) has only two starters back, but they should be the right two. Senior forward Brianna Kulas was the Indians' leading scorer at 18 ppg and senior guard Mary Pat Specht was second on the team at 14 ppg. If the Indians can put some pieces around them, they could challenge for a state berth.

Class 5A

MIEGE (Eastern Kansas) captured the 16th title in program history last year, beating Great Bend in the title game. Title No. 17 could be in store this year with three starters off that squad back. Senior center Adrianna Maurer (6-4) has signed with Nebraska and junior forward Shandelyn Stewart (5-11) was a third-team All-5A pick.

The Stags' toughest competition could come from within its own league as AQUINAS (Eastern Kansas) returns its top 10 players from last year, led by junior guard Dashawn Harden, a second-team All-5A pick who averaged 12.1 ppg last year. Working on a streak of 15 straight state-tournament appearances, the Saints haven't brought home a title since 2004.

A hot run late catapulted GREAT BEND (Western Athletic) to a runner-up finish last year with the Panthers falling to Miege in the finals. The Panthers will miss third-team All-5A guard Amanda Dreiling, but a healthy Alex Hartig will go a long way towards getting them back to the finals. Despite being slowed by a leg injury, Hartig averaged 10 ppg and 7.7 rpg and became a two-time All-5A first-teamer.

At 6-foot-4, Kate Lehman is a matchup problem for most teams and that could help NEWTON (Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail) return to state after a two-year absence. The Railers were just .500 last year, but still made the sub-state finals.

SALINA SOUTH (Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail) will boast one of the top inside games in 5A behind six-footer Taylor Goodness (12.8 ppg) and 6-2 Sally Thompson (5.7 ppg). The Cougars were denied a return trip to state last year, falling to eventual runner-up Great Bend in the sub-state finals.

Class 4A

A 35-30 upset loss to Hayden in the state-tournament semifinals kept CHENEY (Central Plains) from playing for the 4A state title last year. It may take something more this year as the Cardinals return everyone from last year's third-place squad, led by All-Class 4A first-teamer Merissa Quick (13.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg). If that's not enough, senior guard Hailey Twietmeyer returns after sitting out last year and averaging 12.1 ppg as a sophomore.

Coming off the first state berth in program history, GIRARD (CNC) has all the tools to make it back to Salina and make a deeper run this time. Four of five starters return, though three-year starting point guard Whitney Southard will be missed. Seniors Carly Twarog (5-8) and Morgan Boore (5-7) make a dynamic 1-2 punch with Twarog leading the Trojans in scoring all three of her years

SCOTT CITY (Mid-State) steps up to Class 4A this season. The Beavers have a new coach in Mark Campos, who inherits a team that lost its leading scorer (Shelby Kite), but returns three seniors that should finish in the school's top 10 in scoring, steals, blocks and games played.

Class 3A

A second state title in four years just eluded WICHITA COLLEGIATE (MCAA), which fell 65-59 to Southwestern Heights in the title game after also capturing the 2006 title. One of the top players in the state will lead the Spartans back as Ashia Woods was a second-team All-State pick a year ago as a sophomore after she averaged 24 ppg, 8 rpg and 5 apg.

SOUTHWESTERN HEIGHTS (Hi-Plains) finally avoided the injury bug last year and the result was the third state title in program history, secured with a 65-59 victory over Wichita Collegiate in the title game. The Mustangs will miss the services of All-3A guard Vivian Olvera, but juniors Deni Jacobs and Heidi Brown each averaged just better than 11 ppg and are backed by a trio of seniors that averaged at least 6.8 ppg.

Senior forward Katie Regier led REMINGTON (Heart of America) in just about every statistical category last year. This year, she'd like to lead a fairly young, yet experienced team back to state.

Class 2A

It may be hard to believe, but perennial power MOUNDRIDGE (Heart of America) hasn't qualified for state since 2004. Last year, it was a 49-44 upset loss to Inman in the sub-state finals that denied the Wildcats. All-2A first-team center Katie Vogts will be missed, but four returning players averaged at least 6 ppg led by senior guard Spencer Suderman (11 ppg).

With only four seniors and no juniors, BEREAN ACADEMY (Heart of America) will be a fairly young squad. However, senior wing Janelle Rust (17.4 ppg) is capable of carrying the Warriors back to the state tournament as they try to replace second-team All-2A guard Kayla Eilert.

Though just better than a .500 team last year, SYRACUSE (Hi-Plains) has the potential to return to state for the first time since 2003. The Bulldogs have a top-notch 1-2 punch in senior guard Kamie Rash (5-5) and forward Kylee Hedberg (5-9), who each averaged nearly 18 ppg. Hedberg also chipped in 14.3 rpg, while Rash is coming off a knee injury.

Class 1A

A bid for two straight state titles just eluded SOUTH GRAY (SPIAA) last year as the defending champs were unseated in the finals with a 46-35 loss to St. John. It was South Gray's only loss of the season and should serve as motivation for a squad that returns the bulk of its key players for first-year coach Andy Gillen. Three returning starters averaged at least 14 ppg - second-team All-1A pick seniors Brigit Hesser (16 ppg) and Kayla Thomas (14 ppg) and junior Mikayla Skidmore (15 ppg).

Defending champion ST. JOHN (Central Prairie) may have lost a strong senior class, including first-team All-1A picks Beth Cornwell and Alisha Fanshier, but the Tigers aren't going anywhere. Returning senior starters Brooke Burgan (5-4) and Abbie Ward (5-8) head another strong senior class and second-year coach has some talented young players ready to step up.

Four returning starters, led by junior Morgan Westhoff (12.7 ppg) could help ST. PAUL (Three Rivers) return to state for the first time since 2005. Indian coach Doug Tuck is just 10 wins from 400 in his career and has two daughters that will start.

A former standout at WESKAN (Western Kansas Liberty) himself, Troy Okeson returns to take over a Coyote girls program that has some key pieces back from last year's sub-state runner-up team to Dighton. The frontcourt tandem of Payton Walker (5-10) and Hillary McKinney (5-11) will be a force with Walker averaging 16.4 ppg and 9.1 rpg last year.
