The father of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, Daniel Kerrigan, was found dead early Sunday morning, Access Hollywood has learned.

Mark Kerrigan – the victim’s son and skater’s brother – has been arrested and charged with assault and battery on an elder with serious bodily injury.

According to The Boston Herald, Daniel and Mark got into an argument about a phone and the two men began yelling at each other and pushing one another. The police report states that Mark Kerrigan put his “hands around his father’s neck” and the 70-year-old fell to the floor. Mark told authorities that he believed his father was “faking it.”

The police report also reportedly noted there was blood found on the kitchen floor of the home.

The skater’s mother, Brenda Kerrigan, told the paper that her husband died of a heart attack.

“My husband had a massive heart attack,” Brenda Kerrigan said on Monday. “This is a very difficult time for me.”

According WHDH, who confirmed the story to Access, emergency medical crews responded to a call about an unresponsive male in Stoneham, Mass., on Sunday morning. Daniel Kerrigan, 70, was taken to Winchester Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Nancy Kerrigan is a two-time US Olympic figure skating medalist, most famous for her notorious run-in with Tonya Harding in January 1994. A month after being attacked at the US Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Kerrigan went on to win the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.

The Haiti earthquake relief operation faced scathing new criticism today after aid organisations and US forces were accused of being involved in a 'vanity parade' to show solidarity with victims.

In an astonishing outburst, Guido Bertolaso, the head of Italy's civil protection service, claimed there was a lack of leadership in the aid operation and criticised American forces for having no training in running a major civil relief programme.

As angry and frustrated Haitians complained they were still awaiting aid 13 days after the devastating quake, Mr Bertolaso toured the broken streets of the capital Port-au-Prince and described it as a 'terrible situation that could have been managed much better'.

During his criticism, he said it was logical and commendable for the US to lead the relief efforts, but 'too many officers' meant that they had been unable to find a suitable leader.

'We are missing a leader, a co-ordination capacity that goes beyond military discipline,' Mr Bertolaso said.

'It is a truly powerful show of force, but it is completely out of touch with reality.

'They don't have close rapport with the territory, they certainly don't have a rapport with the international organisations and aid groups.'

Despite the massive promise of help and money from around the world, there has been repeated criticism of the relief operation with claims the US focused too much on moving troops rather than aid.

Kerrigan, who grew up in Stoneham, Mass., playing hockey with brothers Michael and Mark, won her first figure skating medal at age nine.

Kerrigan was at the center of a saga at the 1994 U.S. Championships in Detroit when she was hit in the right knee with a collapsible baton by Shane Stant.

An investigation into the assault later revealed that skating rival Tanya Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly had masterminded the attack to keep her from competing in the US Championships.

At age 22, Kerrigan won a bronze medal in women’s figure skating in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France and later a silver medal in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. She won a gold medal at the 1993 U.S. Championships.

After retiring from competitive figure skating, Kerrigan founded The Nancy Kerrigan Foundation to raise awareness for the vision impaired in honor of her mother, Brenda, who is legally blind.

On September 9, 1995, Kerrigan married her agent Jerry Solomon, with whom she has three children: Matthew Eric, Brian and Nicole Elizabeth.
